Oral health is an important part of our overall health and well-being. Unfortunately, many dental problems go unnoticed until they become painful. Understanding the early warning signs can help avoid bigger problems that stem from smaller dental issues.

    Tooth Decay

Tooth decay, or dental caries, is one of the most common problems with your mouth and teeth. It goes from mouth bacteria creating acid and starting to eat away enamel. Watch for any early signs, like teeth developing white or brown spots, or the mild aches and discomfort of certain foods, and especially sweets. If decay is untreated it can eat a hole in the tooth and get into the sensitive inner pulp. It will become infected and cause excruciating pain. Keeping a regular brushing and flossing routine and the use of fluoride will greatly help in cavity prevention.

    Gum Disease

All gum disease initiates with gingivitis, which is a mild inflammation of the gums that occurs because of plaque build up. Symptoms include gums that are swollen, bleed, and atypically red, especially when brushing or flossing. If gingivitis remains untreated, it can advance to periodontitis, a more serious condition wherein the gums begin to pull away from the teeth. This creates deep pockets that trap bacteria which can lead to bone damage or loss of teeth. Deep pocketing and bacteria presence is one of the more serious consequences of gum disease. Periodontitis is the result of severe untreated gingivitis.

    Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity occurs when enamel wears down or when gums recede, exposing the inner dentin. Sharp pain occurs when hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods are consumed. This sensitivity may signal enamel erosion, gum disease, or even fractured teeth. Sensitive teeth toothpaste will help, and mildly aggressive brushing will help even more.

    Bad Breath

Bad breath that is persistent is more than a hygiene issue. It may signal gum disease, cavities, dry mouth, or infection of some sort. Sometimes, this is due to a sinus infection or a problem with the digestive system. Persistent halitosis should be evaluated, and the symptoms should be improved with tongue brushing, water, and proper oral hygiene.

The early warning signs dentist in Fairfax, VA will help to prevent pain, infection, and costly treatments in the future. Taking care of oral hygiene, regular check-ups, and addressing symptoms such as persistent sensitivity and mouth sores will help to prevent further issues. Enacting preventive measures will ensure oral health and prevent more serious issues for a healthy, confident smile for years.
